Efficient Kitchens
Kitchens are essentially the hubs of our homes. They serve many purposes. They are used to prepare and cook food. Lots of entertaining goes on in the kitchen, especially during the holidays. Having a nice, efficient kitchen can be a great investment for years to come.
When redesigning your kitchen there are several key factors that need to be taken into consideration. First, how much space to you need and how much can you accomodate without building on. Are there any pieces, for instance, cabinetry that you can rework. Keeping some existing features can save you lots of money.
Next, check the plumbing and electric, these could cause a major setback later on in the process if not taken care of. Look around the kitchen and decide how much storage space you need, what type of appliances, lighting, and flooring. Also, if you don't have a formal dining area, make sure you have room for a breakfast nook or a bar.
Find a layout suitable for your family. There are several, including u-shaped, l-shaped, island, single line, and breezeway. Decide which type of materials you will need. You may want to go all out with stainless steel or granite. If you want to save money, you may choose laminate or concrete. Do you want to incorporate glass or tiles in the kitchen. Choose the best flooring option. You may choose to lay tile or hardwood. You may go the less costly route and use laminate or linoleum. Look at color combinations. Neutral colors may be best if you enjoy decorating with color and vice versa.
Decide whether or not you need the help of a contractor. You can cut cost by doing it yourself, but if you want to ensure that everything will be maintenance free in the future, it may require some help.
Last, but not least, look at safety and accessibility. If you have small children in the home, you may need certain drawer pulls or cabinet locks. You may need to store sharp objects out of reach. If you are handicapped or have trouble reaching things, you may want to customize certain areas to ensure accessibility.
Renovating a kitchen can take a lot of work, but considering it the hub of the home makes it all worth it in the end. Make sure to design you kitchen to fit your lifestyle and budget and you will be able to enjoy it for years to come.
