If you have just remodeled your home or made a few simple repairs, you likely have what is known as "repair leftovers." This can be extra boards, paneling, sheets of plywood, paint, drywall, etc. All too often, these items are thrown away. At the time, it seems like the only option, as you don't want all this extra scrap materials just lying in the yard or storage shed. Nevertheless, keeping this "junk" can actually pay off in the long run.

Consider, if you will, the extras that everyone would like to have in their home. Perhaps it is a new shelving unit, a bar, a new kitchen island, etc. At some point, most people usually end up implementing these items, but do so buy going out and buying new lumber and supplies to create them. However, if you will take a look at your leftover scrap, you might just find that you have all you need to go ahead and build it.

Let's take a bar, for example, for your living room or den. The clever home fixer-upper can take a few pieces of 2x4 lumber and build a frame, let's say about six foot long. The frame will be rectangular in shape. Then, for the actual countertop, you can take about four 1x5's and nail them onto the frame. For the front and sides of the bar, you can take old paneling or plywood. For accents, you can use some small 2x2 pieces of lumber along the edges. Then, you can either paint the lumber or merely stain it. Most people go with the painting option, but for a classical traditional look to your bar, simply make sure all the lumber is clean and smooth, i.e. a little bit of sanding, and then stain it a nice cherry or walnut color, and then add a finishing coat of polyurethane. For the countertop, ad several extra coats of polyurethane to give it a deep glassy look.

The options for your leftovers are limitless. You can create footstools, coffee tables, shelving, and so much more. Before you throw your leftovers away, try to use your imagination and see what great new accents that you can come up with.

Perhaps you are thinking of building a second floor in your home but are unsure what steps to take in order to build a staircase. If you have just purchased a new home and it is in need of significant repairs, look into what you can do yourself before hiring a carpenter. There are many steps you can take to make your home safe as long as you know what it is that needs to be done. First, take a look at stairs inside your home. What condition are they in? Do they have railings? Are there places inside of your home that need a set of steps? Often times when a homeowner is thinking of adding an additional floor to their home, they are unaware of certain codes and restrictions in place which may prohibit them from building stairs a certain way, in a certain spot or a certain size.

If you are in need of steps inside of your home, be sure and take the correct measurements for your steps. Be sure you are following whatever guidelines or codes that are in place for your area. Often, if you are unaware of these codes, you can call your local home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot and they will have the information for you. Most typically, stairs are required to have a good 10" worth of tread. Take the correct measurements with a tape measure so you know you are accurate. Keep in mind that the number of steps is usually one less than the number of risers. So take the number of steps and multiply by 10. This is how far out your steps will be.

With this measurement, you are then able to mark your floor to signify the starting point of your staircase. If you are building your stairs by a wall, the front of the stairs must be at least 3 feet away from the wall in front of them. As a safety precaution, make sure that your bottom step is not an obstruction for another room such as a kitchen or living room. This can be a danger and can lead to accidents such as tripping and falling down. Design your staircase on draft paper before you start building so you have an idea of the shape and location of your stairs. This will help you in the long run when tackling such a large home improvement project.

Electricians

If you are thinking of developing a career as an electrician, there are courses, licenses and accreditations you need to obtain. This is an easy process with the right amount of determination and work. You need to set goals for yourself and follow them strictly. A career such as this requires competence and diligence. There will always be a need for electricians within both residential and commercial areas. The amount of expertise needed may vary depending on the situation you are in but the basics are all the same.

Search on the internet or ask your high school counselor to help you find an accredited school where you can gain an electrician's license. Ask around through local companies to see who offers licensing and apprenticeship programs. Often times you can spend a few years in one of these programs with on the job training in order to acquire your license with some hands on skill to boot. Be sure and ask about paid training so you have a way to afford a living for yourself while becoming established in the electrician's field.

It can be tough working and going to school at the same time. You are looking at well over forty hours a week worth of your time that you must dedicate to your school and training in order to achieve your goal. Look into part-time classes to help ease the burden of your workload.

Attention to detail is extremely important. Most of what you need to know will come from watching those around you and observing the how-to of every detail. You will need to know what tools do what, how to handle certain situations, what the names of parts are and more. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your supervisor will be more pleased if you do as it shows them that you are truly interested in the work.

Once you have finished with school apply to take the exams. Exams will help you get your license and become an accredited electrician. There are fees that you are required to pay in order to take the exam. In order to find out how much the fee is, check according to the state that you live in. Often times, requirements might be different depending on state as well. Be sure and gather all of your information so you don't miss a step.
